What is the difference between Psychotherapy and Life Coaching/Educational Services?
While there is a great deal of overlap between psychotherapy and coaching there are very distinct differences.
Psychotherapists are trained to help individuals living with mental health illnesses that meet the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5TR). Treatment goals will focus on addressing symptoms from diagnostic criteria. This is typically covered by insurance. A psychotherapist must have an advanced degree and a state license to practice.
Coaches or Educational Specialists are not trained to address mental health issues and are more focused on helping others to meet future goals. Typically, these services are not covered by insurances. Does not have a governing board. Psychotherapists can provide coaching, but coaches cannot provide psychotherapy.
